History
The construction of the Musical Dome Cologne lasted only about six months, as it was originally intended to be a temporary building. It was opened in October 1996 and has since become a permanent highlight of the Cologne cultural scene. The first show at the Musical Dome was the musical “Gaudi”, which was not financially successful. New owners turned the Dome into a financial success with the 70s musical “Saturday Night Fever” starting in 1999. Between 2004 and 2008, there were about 1,400 performances of “We Will Rock You”, the biggest success in the Musical Dome.
From 2012, the Musical Dome was temporarily taken over by the Cologne Opera, which performed pieces under the title “Oper am Dom” in the Musical Dome. This was due to the renovation of the opera house at Offenbachplatz. In the fall of 2015, the opera left the Musical Dome Cologne and musicals are once again being shown. In the future, the Staatenhaus am Rheinpark will also serve as a musical theater in Cologne.
Location of the Musical Dome
The Musical Dome Cologne is easily accessible on foot from the city’s main train station as well as from your Mercure Hotel. From the “Breslauer Platz” exit of the station, you can already see the Dome. It is particularly easy to spot in the dark with its blue lighting. The Musical Dome, located at Goldgasse 1, is also easily accessible by car and public transportation.

Current performance: Moulin Rouge
The popular musical “Moulin Rouge” has been captivating audiences at the Cologne Musical Dome since 2022. With 75 songs from over 160 composers, it celebrates several decades of pop music history, creating a musical extravaganza. The story revolves around a young writer in Paris in the year 1899, who falls in love with the star of the legendary Moulin Rouge nightclub.

The Cologne Musical Dome has been entertaining audiences since 1996. Artists from around the world bring first-class musicals to life here, including Saturday Night Fever, Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires), and Bodyguard. The Queen musical “We Will Rock You” even ran for four years in Cologne and attracted two million visitors. In addition to musicals and long-running productions, the venue also hosts shows by international musicians, concerts, Schlager parties (German pop music genre), and film music performances.
